UpFront with Tony Cox is a daily news and talk show that captures the pulse and illuminates the diversity of the African-American experience. Host Tony Cox engages politicians, activists, journalists, artists, entertainers, scholars, youth, scientists, religious leaders, authors and more — bringing newsmakers and change-makers to the air waves everyday.
The show prominently features voices and perspectives of African-American communities — and under-represented groups — on news and culture. Veteran journalist Tony Cox tackles the complex issues of our time with experts and newsmakers, as well as hosts roundtables with pundits, journalists and bloggers to explore multiple angles on the subject matter.
Cox is also a lover of the arts and a connoisseur of pop culture. From time to time, the show will feature hour-long in-depth interviews with some of the cultural and pop icons of our time, with thoughtful discussions about their contributions to society and what their privileged positions have allowed them understand about the world, society and the human condition.
UpFront with Tony Cox is a production of the African-American Public Radio Consortium. The Consortium and National Public Radio have worked as partners for the past eight years to create programs that serve more culturally diverse audiences. Their first project, The Tavis Smiley Show, which debuted in 2002, was the first African-American focused show to air on the network. The partnership followed up with the creation of News & Notes with hosts Ed Gordon and Farai Chideya in 2005, and Tell Me More with host Michel Martin in 2007.
“Tony Cox is a voice that our audiences trust. He’s the perfect compliment of high quality editorial values, with awareness of the new voices and sensibilities that should have a place in the media landscape. Tony is well known and respected by many in the political, arts, journalism and sports worlds. He’s honed his skill as a journalist for years in the field and will bring a tremendous amount of back-story understanding to the discussions. UpFront will bring thought-provoking discussions to our listeners, sparking conversations that we hope will commence on the airwaves and continue beyond the show into communities across the country,” said Loretta Rucker, Executive Director of the African-American Public Radio Consortium.
UpFront with Tony Cox airs Monday through Friday in 17 markets, including Atlanta, Raleigh-Durham, Houston, and Las Vegas.
